Tangle

Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Lethbridge, 2022-23

“Tangle” consisted of 21 gouache paintings on paper selected from a set of approximately 200 works that date back to 2008. It also included a large-scale wall painting made directly on the wall during the course of the exhibition. It used the same parameters that shape the works on paper.

Spontaneity, immediacy, and stepping away from analytical thinking are the essential ingredients for this work. Walking also inspired paintings, though the paintings did not literally depict a walk using mapping or image making, rather they seemed to be an extension of the walk itself. My walking drawing/paintings merge the memory of a walk taken, together with the drawn line that meanders on the field of the page echoing Paul Klee’s famous quote, stating that drawing is taking a line for walk. The attempt to be in the present moment, even as it keeps slipping away, shapes and welcomes unplanned painting processes and results.
